Fundamentals

Knowledge of any subject cannot be fully measured by the answers one is capable of giving, as many responses can be quite vague and are based simply upon memorization or repetition of what someone else has said. Knowledge is illustrated more thoroughly, instead, in the depth and relevance of questions someone is able to ask. But in order to ask essential, important questions, one needs a basic understanding of the subject material.

Wildlife biology, ecology, natural resource utilization, land use practices, land ownership types, regulations, and so many other aspects of conservation are comprised of many definitions, themes, principles, and basic premises. This section will aim to function as a compendium for these sorts of topics. A compilation of essays, explanations and examples to serve as a general foundation for promoting understanding the complexities of conservation, and the basic themes upon which the variations for each model or program are built. A reference to help truthfully guide conversations about conservation.

January 2020. My pickup truck headlights illuminated a mostly solid blanket of fresh snow, highway lines only partially visible in the wind-scoured areas between the drifts. At 2:30AM, most North Dakotans were sleeping. Yet there I was, four wheel drive mandatorily engaged, post blizzard, enroute to the airport to my first ever Dallas Safari Club (DSC) Convention.

There is, unfortunately, a confusing array of definitions of the word conservation. At its most basic level, it can be described as a wise and careful utilization of any resource.
