Back Trails

Although a major goal of conservation is to ensure that nature has a sustainable future, that typically cannot be accomplished by only looking ahead. Learning about and acknowledging what occurred in the past is an incredibly important perspective to have too. Not only does the past determine what we have to work with in the present day, but it also illustrates what our trials and tribulations were, under the conditions at the time, and how we handled them. There can be much to learn from such retrospection, but we must always remember, too, that our current conditions are not directly comparable to the past.

This section will offer a historical perspective on conservation issues around the globe. Trails already traversed, from whence we’ve come, on the hunt for truths and solutions. People whose contributions and foresight were pivotal and integral to what we have to work with today, for better or for worse. The future will be shaped by those with a wide range of vision who can clearly view the realities of the past and present, in their proper contexts, whilst also looking ahead.
